The warm, enchanting tenor voice of José ‘Zé’ Luis has been a well-kept secret for many years. Since the 1960s he has been recognized by a small audience in the Cape Verdean capital Praia. Singing used to be his personal pleasure while making a living as a carpenter. Only at the age of 60 he made his international breakthrough with Serenata (2013), an album full of timeless songs accompanied by traditional plucked instruments. For the singer, morna is the most typically Cape Verdean style of romantic expression. Combining melancholy and sensuality, it is rooted in the soul and identity of his people.
