Wolfert Brederode’s piano playing and compositions are recognizable and surprising at the same time, because of their subtle contrasts. His new album Ruins and Remains became a reflection on the resilience of man. Originally, the music was dedicated to the commemoration of the end of World War I. In light of the covid pandemic, and other far-reaching events, its perspective became wider, and its character more personal.
Ruins and Remains was recorded with percussionist Joost Lijbaart and the Matangi Quartet, a Dutch string quartet. Influences from jazz, folk, contemporary classical, and minimal music coalesce in a natural way. Melancholy, lyricism, abstraction, and adventure alternate around the two motifs ‘Ruins’ and ‘Remains’. The album will appear this fall on the internationally renowned label ECM Records.
