UNIVERSAL INDIANS & JOE MCPHEE. PETER BRÖTZMANN & ONNO GOVAERT
- Starts
- 20:30
A meeting of two generations of titans in this double concert with raw avant-jazz: trumpeter/saxophonist Joe McPhee with the group Universal Indians, followed by the duo of reeds player Peter Brötzmann.
From soulful eruptions on tenor saxophone to electronic music and abstract improvisations on pocket cornet: Joe McPhee covers an exceptionally broad musical range. The American saxophonist/trumpet player started his career in the 1960s. Now he will perform with Universal Indians, who are inspired by the passionate, emotionally charged free jazz of McPhee’s generation. The band consists of Norwegian musicians Jon Rune Strøm (double bass) and Tollef Østvang (drums) plus tenor saxophonist John Dikeman, who plays a leading role in the Amsterdam improvised music scene.
Ever since his debut album For Adolphe Sax (1967) Peter Brötzmann has been adding new dimensions to the sound of the saxophone, blowing away every rule in the book. His raw, unbridled improvisations with drummer Han Bennink are legendary. At the Bimhuis he will perform with drummer Onno Govaert, who presents the new generation of Amsterdam musicians. ‘With that tenor between his lips he becomes nothing less than a force of nature’ (The Wire).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
