Via Belgica

Too Many Fish & MDCIII

Exciting Belgian night featuring groundbreaking bands.

For the concert series Via Belgica, we invite bands who prove how exciting and progressive Belgian jazz can be. Time and again the Belgian scene gives new impulses to jazz, by crossing over with rock, hip-hop, and electronics, for example. In this edition: the eight-piece Too Many Fish, the trio MDCIII.

Too Many Fish features Flemish celebrities such as actor Sam Louwyck and trumpeter Bart Maris. The eight-piece formation celebrates the tenth anniversary of Too Noisy Fish, the piano trio consisting of Peter Vandenberghe (piano), Kristof Roseeuw (double bass) and Teun Verbruggen (drums). Expect a dynamic musical trip shifting between exotica, cinematic music, spoken word and free jazz.

For saxophonist Mattias De Craene, MDCIII is a platform to transcend daily life and touch on the sublime, inspired by the uncompromising spiritual jazz movement that started with the album Interstellar Space by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali. In MDCIII, Mattias is accompanied by no less than two drummers: Simon Segers (who’s also a member of De Beren Gieren) and Lennert Jacobs. Together they interchange abstract and introspective passages with ecstatic outbursts.
