In her quartet, cellist Tomeka Reid gathers new heroes of American jazz around her. Recently she took an important step as a composer by exploring extended themes, which she brought together as a suite on her recent album 3+3. What stands out is the remarkable balance between the classical acoustic cello of Tomeka Reid and the flexible electronic effects of guitarist Mary Halvorson.
As an improvising cellist, Tomeka Reid has carved a unique path in the jazz world. Several times she has reached the number one spot in the Downbeat Critics Poll in the miscellaneous instruments category. She’s one of the younger members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, alongside veterans such as Roscoe Mitchell and Don Moye. She’s also an active member of the creative music scene in New York.
‘A sweet suite of beautiful melodies and open improv. Lovely’ (Downbeat, on the album 3+3).
