Tim Berne’s raw and soulful style of playing saxophone bears echoes of his master Julius Hemphill. With his DIY approach, Berne inspires New York’s improvising musicians. His bands functioned as springboards for many new talents such players as Joey Baron, Bill Frisell and Jim Black all become known thanks to Berne. In Los Totopos Berne presents new compositions by yet another new group of collaborators: Oscar Noriega, Matt Mitchell and Ches Smith. ‘For all the saxophonist’s unapologetic rawness, he’s a master too’ (Penguin Guide to Jazz).
