A captivating mix of jazz, Armenian folk, rock and electronica by pianist and Paul Acket Award winner Tigran, a favorite of Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau.

As a teenager he was already lauded by celebrities such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau. Pianist Tigran Hamasyan made his breakthrough with his solo CD A Fable, ‘a poetic and haunting album’ according to Downbeat which gave it a four-and-a-half-star-review. Tigran has lived in Los Angeles for over ten years, but his music is infused with the culture of his native Armenia, where he currently resides.

Alongside rock and electronica his music is influenced by Armenian folk and poetry. At the Bimhuis he will perform with his energetic trio, with which he has recorded his recent album Mockroot. At North Sea Jazz 2015 Tigran presented with the Paul Acket Award, the award for exceptionally talented jazz musicians who are at the beginning of their career.

‘For me it’s more like an electro-acoustic Armenian rock trio than a regular jazz trio. Sometimes we sound like a heavy metal band, or a dubstep DJ, or like some late 19th century Armenian composers like Nikoghayos Tigranyan and Komitas, with newer harmonic and rhythmic approaches. It’s all underlined by something that’s very simple, melancholic, and romantic’ (Tigran).

entrance).
