THREE HORNS AND A BASS / PODIUM TRIO / DUO DAVID MURRAY / JOHN BETSCH

Highlights from the annual Stranger Than Paranoia Festival in Tilburg, Breda and Den Bosch, with A-list saxophonist David Murray and the rebirth of the Podium Trio.

For 22 years Paul van Kemenade has organized the jazz festival Stranger Than Paradise in Tilburg and this year he will once again travel to the Bimhuis for a reprise. Alto sax player and composer Van Kemenade will open the concert with his group Three Horns and a Bass. This unusual line-up could already be heard on Close Enough, the album that got a 5-star review in Downbeat: ‘The perfect tonal overlay, with bassist Wiro Mahieu as a fine counterweight’. This month the group will release a new album.

The Podium Trio has risen again. For years this group was one of the most prominent jazz trios in The Netherlands. Their performances together with American jazz funk musicians Cornell Rochester and Jamaaladeen Tacuma were unforgettable experiences. The ‘boys from ’57’ (all three were born in 1957 and are now aged 57) will play old and new original compositions, in the still unusual combination of alto sax, trombone and guitar.

Tenor sax player David Murray and drummer John Betsch both made name in the New York alternative jazz scene of the late 1970s. Now they both live in Europe. David Murray has an instantly recognizable style, which encompasses soul, gospel and free jazz. Ever since he played the Bimhuis for the first time in 1976, his first concert outside the US, he has released over 150 albums under his own name. John Betsch debuted with his album Earth Blossom on the independent label Strata-East and he has performed with, among others, Mal Waldron, Jim Pepper and Steve Lacy.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
