In the late 50’s Dr. Lonnie Smith finds the Hammond B3, ‘a 425 pound beast’, as Smith calls this organ with the recognizable sound. With the group of soul jazz giant Lou Donaldson he performed at the Bimhuis a number of times. ‘Under his dancing hands and feet on the pedals, the authentic Hammond B3 was transformed into a grooving steam machine. As a cheerful agitator Smith, with turban, pushed his organ, as ever, to higher grounds.’ (NRC Handelsblad).
