For decades she has been a class of her own: Carla Bley, with her playful songs, dry sense of humour and her pleasant, poetic way of unraveling a theme. She likes to pull the listeners leg with surprising jumps, crazy quotes and a variation of spheres in which irony and gravity appear to be really close together. Also in this compact setting, in which saxophonist Sheppard seems to play with even more vigour than he does in his own groups, lies a great virtuosity underneath all the fun.
