With her passionate performances percussionist Tatiana Koleva proves herself as an unprecedented champion of new music composition. She has been recognized as one of the best solo performers on marimba, in her native Bulgaria and in her current homeland The Netherlands as well as internationally. She has played an important role in the emancipation of the marimba as a fully fledged solo instrument.
On the occasion of her new album release Songs for Marimba, Tatiana Koleva will perform a selection of new compositions, together with renowned guest musicians. The music was written and developed in close collaboration with composers Jacob TV, Peter Klatzow, David Dramm, Florian Magnus Maier and Albert van Veenendaal. Koleva herself arranged the breathtaking ‘In A Landscape’ by John Cage for percussion ensemble, and she composed the piece ‘Way Home’ in dedication of her native Bulgaria.
‘An immersive experience in rhythmic experimentation… Koleva’s octopus-like movement around the kit was a spectacle in itself, the resulting sound bringing to mind both Japanese taiko drumming and the free improvisation of Milford Graves. With the unpredictable rolls of booming bass drums and high, alien-sounding woodblocks, one got the sense was listening to music either from the very distant past or a very distant future’ (Bachtrack).
