THE SYRIAN BIG BAND CODARTS UNION

Syrian Big Band and Codarts Big Band join forces for the final chord of the Global Week for Syria, with among others jazz arrangements of Arabic songs.

As the first big band in the Arabic world, the Syrian Big band has given a voice to jazz music in its country of origin, Syria. Despite its success the band fell apart in 2011 when the Syrian war broke out. Part of the band is now living in Europe. As far as possible, these musicians are reunited in collaboration with the Codarts Big Band and various soloists.

The Codarts Big Band features the best jazz students of the Rotterdam conservatory Codarts and is led by trombonist, composer and Thelonious Monk Award-winner Ilja Reijngoud. The repertory covers the many musical traditions of Syria and includes Arabic classical music as well as traditional songs as arranged by, among others, Wolf Kerschek of the NDR Big Band and Frank Carlsberg. This project is part of the Global Week for Syria.
