Superless is a band doing the split, with one foot firmly planted in jazz history with the other scrambling, trying to get a foothold somewhere between MF DOOM and Messiaen. The quartet made its debut at the Nattjazz Festival in Bergen, Norway in 2022. Now they’re back, with a brand new album appearing this fall.

Norwegian drummer Øyvind Skarbø brought the band together. On saxophone and synthesizer we recognize Eirik Hegdal, who previously performed here with Gard Nilssen’s Supersonic Orchestra. That band also featured Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, who’s known as the double bassist and bass guitarist in influential Scandinavian bands such as Atomic and The Thing. Guitarist Jeff Parker made name in the Chicago jazz and improv scene, and became more widely known as a member of post-rock band Tortoise.
