For the last couple of years Space is the Place has been organizing intimate and spectacular evenings focus on jazz, improvised music and beyond, at De Ruimte, a venue in North Amsterdam. After almost five hundred concerts and more than a thousand musicians, the circus occasionally moves across the IJ river. Space is the Place will now take over the BIMHUIS with bands and musicians who have or have not played at De Ruimte, with STUFF. as the headline act.
‘If an energy drink could make music, it would sound like STUFF.’, said Jazz Standard about the five-piece Belgian sensation that wins over more and more international festivals and venues with their mighty groove, spanning from future funk to broken beats and hip-hop. The band featuring drum prodigy Lander Gyselinck recently released the album Old Dreams, New Planets on the British label Gondwana (of Portico Quartet fame).
Guitarist Andy Moor, who’s known from The Ex, and composer Yannis Kyriakides started out as a duo years ago, improvising in the vein of soundscapes. They have deconstructed and reassembled their favorite rebetika music, the so called blues of the Greek diaspora of the early 20th century, in addition to classical and South American music. Together with designer Isabelle Vigier they run the label Unsounds.
Gerri Jäger is best known from the band Knalpot, infiltrating the Amsterdam underground as well as the European festivals with ‘raw electronics, wild improv and danceable dub’ (de Volkskrant). Following his conservatory studies in Amsterdam, the Austrian-born drummer immersed himself in experimental music, combining his drums with the kind of gear mostly associated with DJ’s. At the Bimhuis Jäger presents his new EP ‘Gerri Jäger Live at Vrooom’.
