Spring Duets with i.a. Tineke Postma, Tony Roe, Frans van der Hoeven, Mete Erker

Special evening with new encounters: Nawras Altaky/Tony Roe, Mete Erker/Dré Pallemaerts, Annelie Koning/Saartje van Camp, Frans van der Hoeven/Glenn Gaddum, Tineke Postma/Jonas Burgwinkel.

Spring, a time of renewal and growth. In our annual Spring Duets series we celebrate this sense of spring by creating new encounters between musicians we hold in high regard. Whether they are young heroes, internationally acclaimed performers, improv veterans or unique outsiders, together they take on the challenge of creating a new sound. Each duo will perform a set of 20 minutes, after which they will be interviewed by Hasna El Maroudi.

Nawras Altaky & Tony Roe – ud/vocals & piano/electronics

Vocalist, composer and ud-player Nawras Altaky blends beautiful Arabic melodies with the freedom of jazz harmony and the power of classical counterpoint like no other. The young musician has already shared the stage with big names on the Dutch jazz scene, including pianist Tony Roe. Roe has played on our stage several times with a whole host of projects, including Tin Men & The Telephone, Janne Schra & De Vogels and in duo with Vernon Chatlein.

Mete Erker & Dré Pallemaerts – saxophone & drums

Two musicians who stand out because of their flexibility, interplay and timing. Saxophonist Mete Erker, previously on our stage with Artvark and in duo with Jeroen van Vliet, is known for his personal approach to music, combined with his warm tone and lyrical playing.  Flemish drummer Dré Pallemaerts always gives everything on stage, in a continuous search for the right sound. He has previously performed at our venue with Mark Turner and Tineke Postma and was a band member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra.

Annelie Koning & Saartje van Camp – vocals & vocals/cello

Two outstanding vocalists will duet: Annelie Koning sang in the vocal ensemble August 38th during vocalist Laura Polence’s REFLEX evening at our venue and is in the collective King Sisters, with whom she is currently creating the performance CLOSE to HARMONY. Cellist and vocalist Saartje Van Camp combines her voice with her cello and makes music with whatever she encounters: samplers, synthesizers, street sounds, anything can be music. She played at the last edition of Corrie van Binsbergen’s Brokkenfestival, performed a solo at Interplanatary Night and is currently touring the country in duo with Spinvis.

Frans van der Hoeven & Glenn Gaddum – double bass & electric bass

Bass, bass and more bass; two master bassists, both at the top of the Dutch music scene for years. Van der Hoeven excels on double bass with his powerful tone and accompanied countless top musicians, from Tineke Postma and Fay Claasen to Toots Thielemans and Woody Shaw. Glenn Gaddum is at home in a wide range of styles, including jazz, funk, soul, pop, rock and hip-hop. He is a sought-after sideman and has played with Anouk, Frank McComb and the Dominic J Marshall Trio, among others.

Tineke Postma & Jonas Burgwinkel – alto saxophone & drums

Lyrical, melodic and full of groove and emotion: that’s what Tineke Postma is all about. The saxophonist has already played with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding, and last year presented her most recent album Aria, with Ben Monder, among others. Now she will duet with Jonas Burgwinkel. The drummer is a member of the supergroup Deadeye with Reinier Baas and Kit Downes and has shared the stage with big names like John Scofield, Chris Potter and Lee Konitz.

Exhibition opening
Prior to the concert, the exhibition Space Impro | Capturing the Scene will be opened in our café. The exhibition consists of portraits made by photographer Erik Smits in de Ruimte, the place where the most lively and radical music is performed, in great contrast to the photo setting which has no frills. Each photo grinds and fumbles, the stories are visable everywhere. The exhibition is a time document of the Space Impro scene at the Space on the Distelweg. You are welcome to stop by from 6:30 PM, the opening is free to attend.
