TRYTONE 20

Spinifex Soufifex & Celano/Badenhorst/Baggiani

For 20 years and counting the platform TryTone represents musical innovation, with album releases, concert series and festivals. Anniversary concert with singular international bands and musicians.

Since 1998 the Amsterdam label TryTone has a history of being there for musicians and bands who want to forge their own paths and move into new directions, whether departing from jazz, improv, non-western music or contemporary composition. TryTone gives room to unique voices by means of albums, concerts, festivals and international exchange projects.

Guitarist Guillermo Celano and drummer Marcos Baggiani are irreplaceable parts of the Amsterdam jazz and improvised music scene. However, a certain melancholy in their music still refers to their Argentinean roots. Together with Flemish (bass) clarinet and sax player Joachim Badenhorst they tread the boundaries between songs and improvisation, between harmony and abstraction.

The six-piece ensemble Spinifex presents the new project Soufifex, inspired by sufi traditions all over the world. In the typical Spinifex style – super tight structures combined with razor sharp improvisation – the musicians delve into a magical world of repetitive patterns that require the utmost concentration on the beat. Spinifex, named after a tough Australian species of grass, may at first sound like a combination of jazzcore, metal and other Western contemporary music. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms from the East.

‘The beautiful thing is that TryTone has kept on developing. A likeable platform for young musicians and new developments’ (de Volkskrant).
