SEMINAR – THE LEFT HAND AND THE ART OF PIANO PLAYING
SEMINAR – THE LEFT HAND AND THE ART OF PIANO PLAYING
- Starts
- 15:00
This seminar
concentrates on the importance of the left hand while playing piano. The left
hand is the musical conscience as the foundation of music is built upon rhythm
and harmony. Piano music for the left hand is a consequential red line
throughout the Young Pianists Festival Amsterdam, 2015.
For those interested in this topic, the seminar this
afternoon will concentrate on, among other things: technique and physiology of the left hand,
difficulties in playing piano with the left hand only, and related repertoire.
When a pianist, whatever the circumstance, is forced to rely upon the left
hand, a unique situation presents itself. The hand controlling the musical
conscience must also render lyricism, charm, and remonstrance. For a number of
composers, including Maurice Ravel, Sergei
Prokofiev, and Richard Strauss, this was a fascinating challenge.
Tragically enough, World War I, which took place 100 years ago, was the
starting point for many famous compositions for the left hand.
Bimhuis cafe is open during and after the seminar. The
restaurant is open from 17:00 to 20:15 (reservation recommended:
