REFLEX
Jazz finds roots in activism. In challenging or bypassing conventions. A conversation with the status quo. In its most free form – improvisation – jazz is constantly searching for new forms of interaction. This quest and the conversations that are found are central to REFLEX. Kicking off, we invite Sanem Kalfa to have that conversation on our stage.
For Reflex, Sanem Kalfa was inspired by the experience of living in lockdown. Conflicting feelings were processed into new compositions, in which she sings and plays cello. The Turkish singer will be accompanied on stage by four musicians and a visual artist, all female. ‘The songs are mine and also other people’s stories,’ says Sanem. ‘They speak about love, loss, childhood, addiction, fear, joy, hunger.’
The visuals for the concert are created by artist Ilgen Arzik from Istanbul. Furthermore, the ensemble consists of musicians from various countries, who live in The Netherlands, like Sanem. Sanem Kalfa has performed at our venue various times in a duo line-up with violist George Dumitriu. In 2010 she won the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, when the jury was led by Quincy Jones.
REFLEX is made possible with help of:
