Saxophone master Roscoe Mitchell (Art Ensemble of Chicago) improvises with drummer Mike Reed, key figure in the current Chicago music scene. Pure avant-jazz!

Saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell is a pioneer in many ways. He founded Art Ensemble of Chicago and the groundbreaking collective AACM (Association of Advancement of Creative Musicians. His album Sound (1966) is a milestone in the development of free improvisation and to this day he explores new sounds and techniques on every kind of saxophone. Although he hasn’t lived in Chicago for many years he’s still a great example for musicians in that city, for example Mike Reed, with whom he performs as a duo.

Drummer and composer Mike Reed is a key figure in the current Chicago music scene, as the founder of the Constellation club and the influential Pitchfork Music Festival. His band Loose Assembly has already collaborated with Roscoe Mitchell and with his project People, Places and Things he has explored the musical heritage of his hometown. As the descendant of an Indonesian-Dutch family he has a special relationship with the Amsterdam jazz scene; last year People, Places and Things released the album Second Cities: Volume 1, with pieces by among others Guus Janssen, Sean Bergin and Eric Boeren.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
