ROB MAZUREK BLACK CUBE SP
ROB MAZUREK BLACK CUBE SP
- Starts
- 20:30
Emotionally charged music by the visionary corneter Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground, São Paulo Underground), touching on the psychedelic jazz of Sun Ra and Miles Davis.
Rob Mazurek started playing the cornet as a child, but became really motivated to become a musician at the age of 16 when he saw the Sun Ra Arkestra perform. He made name in the Chicago music scene as a multi-instrumentalist operating between jazz, avant-garde and electronica. Since the 1990s he has been collaborating with drummer Chad Taylor in Chicago Underground Duo. For nine years he has lived in Brazil, where he founded São Paulo Underground. This band formed the basis for Black Cube SP, in which horns meet Brazilian and electronic instruments. The multi-layered music touches on the psychedelic jazz of Sun Ra and Miles Davis. 2014 saw the release of the highly acclaimed album Return the Tides, an emotionally charged tribute to Mazurek’s mother, who died shortly before the recordings.
‘This music is especially heartfelt and, no matter how loud, free and dense it becomes, informed by a deep tenderness’ (The Wire).
This concert is part of ‘Amsterdam is Public and accessible for We Are Public members.
