Pierre Courbois 3GEN3

Progressive Dutch jazz hero celebrates his oeuvre with players from different generations. Beforehand a screening of the documentary De Pionier.

With his latest formation 3GEN3 (‘Three Generations Trio’) drum legend Pierre Courbois sheds new light on his impressive career. Highlights from his oeuvre are being re-invented, whereas new pieces are added to their repertoire as well. He stretches the boundaries of improvisation with this trio that encompasses three generations and feautures the experienced bassist Wiro Mahieu alongside young saxophone talent Jesse Schilderink.

Internationally renowned Dutch drummer Pierre Courbois has always been at the forefront of new developments in jazz. He took lessons with Kenny Clarke in Paris, he stood at the foundation of free jazz and fusion in Europe, and his drum breaks on vinyl are still being used regularly by DJs. He has collaborated with numerous legends, including Eric Dolphy, Ben Webster and Willem Breuker.

Beforehand, there will be a screening of the documentary The Pioneer, a film by Els Dinnissen. The Pioneer offers a bird’s eye view of Pierre Courbois’ musical career. All kinds of people from the jazz world – Jasper van het Hof, Jesse Schilderink, Hans Dulfer, Wiro Mahieu and Loek Dikker, among others, collaborated on the documentary – contribute to a colourful portrait of the versatile Courbois.
