Sparks will fly during this confrontation between the new ensemble Oerknal! and Flemish-Dutch ‘jazz revelation’ (de Volkskrant) De Beren Gieren.
The young contemporary music ensemble Oerknal! meets the up-and-coming piano trio De Beren Gieren, in an exciting set featuring compositions by John Zorn, David Bird and Lewis Nielson, alongside pieces by De Beren Gieren-pianist Fulco Ottervanger.
Oerknal! is dedicated to groundbreaking music by contemporary composers. ‘Music is a visceral art and should be experienced in an intense, physical manner’, says director and composer Gregory Charette , leader of the group of young musicians that was formed last year. This The Hague-based ensemble has international appeal, with members coming from Italy, Cuba, the US and other countries. Alongside traditional venues Oerknal! plays in public spaces and abandoned buildings as well as underground clubs, bars and galleries.
De Beren Gieren have been compared to other innovative Dutch trios such as Kapok and Tin Men & The Telephone: young, cheeky bands loosely combining jazz, modern classical, rock and hip-hop who dare to use their own language. With his witty song titles, composer/pianist Fulco Ottervanger shows a remarkbale sense of poetry and humor. He formed De Beren Gieren with bassist Lieven Van Pee and drummer Simon Segers, who are both from Ghent, Belgium. Their second album ‘a ravelling’ received rave reviews in the Femish and Dutch press.
‘A jazz revelation… De Beren Gieren plays jazz that makes us very cheerful’ (de Volkskrant).
