MARK TURNER QUARTET
Friday30 October 2015

Revered tenor sax player from New York, known from the trio Fly, presents contemporary jazz from his ECM album Lathe of Heaven with his quartet featuring trumpet player Avishai Cohen.

Mark Turner is one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, renowned for his exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the tenor horn. Melody takes primacy on his most recent album Lathe of Heaven, released on ECM Records. The music breathes the same mysterious, haunting atmosphere as the eponymous science fiction novel by Ursula K. Le Guin from 1971, after which the album was named. The spirit of Miles roams about on the album and Wayne Shorter has also left his influence, just like Stevie Wonder. Renowned trumpet player Avishai Cohen plays on the album and will also appear at the Bimhuis. Mark Turner has played here before as a member of Fly, the all-star trio with double bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard.

‘An intoxicating quartet effort’ (Downbeat).

‘A thinking person’s improviser… a cooler brand of cool jazz’ (Kevin Whitehead, NPR).
