DATSKAT WEEKEND

MAGRO | Glimlip X Yasper

Hip-hop beats versus jazz vibes from Berlin, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

In our new series DATSKAT we mix jazz with hip-hop and (neo)soul. Our stage is given to the established and new generation of artists who represent this sound. Friday is the kick-off with MAGRO and Glimlip X Yasper. Saturday the festival continues with the Ashey Henry Trio and Brintex Collective.

Berlin-based drummer and producer MAGRO creates an unusual fusion of acoustic jazz and produced hip-hop and R&B. His project combines many of his musical influences, such as Herbie Hancock, J Dilla and Chris Dave. Following his award-winning album Trippin’, MAGRO has released II, a meeting between spacy jazz, pumping beats, and abstract synths. In recent years, MAGRO has collaborated with international tastemakers such as Kenny Wesley, BIGYUKI en Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Ever since their first encounter, Glimlip and Yasper have been collaborating to create instrumental hip-hop with jazz influences. Rotterdam-based producer Glimlip mixes live instruments with computer beats. Amsterdam-based guitarist Yasper is fascinated by jazz as well as soul and hip-hop. For their album Undertones, the two have collaborated with artists from Dutch hip-hop and jazz. Live on stage, their music sounds more abrasive than on record, inspired by role models such as Flying Lotus, Robert Glasper, and Jordan Rakei. Trumpeter Peter Somuah and special guest Nic Hanson will join the stage.
