LOUIS MOHOLO-MOHOLO QUARTET
LOUIS MOHOLO-MOHOLO QUARTET
- Starts
- 20:30
One of the great jazz drummers, famous for his free style and unmistakable drive. ‘The great South African drummer’s fires still burn brightly’ (The Guardian).
Louis Moholo-Moholo is one of the great drummers of jazz, a pioneer of free improvisation with an unmistakable drive and a uniquely distinctive style. In 2005 he returned to his native South Africa, after living in London for decades. In his current quartet he plays with British musicians including rising star pianist Alexander Hawkins, who recently played the Bimhuis with Han Bennink. Raving reviews of the recent album 4 Blokes reveal that Moholo’s playing is as intense as ever.
Louis Moholo (the doubling of his last name followed later) made the scene in Europe after he moved to London in 1964 with the legendary Blue Notes. This band gave a new impulse to jazz and improvised music with influences of catchy songs from the South-African townships. Moholo has performed at the Bimhuis many times in the past, for example with Amsterdam players such as Sean Bergin and the ICP musicians.
‘It’s impossible to replicate the intensity and near overwhelming beauty of seeing the band live’ (The Quietus).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
