Singer Kurt Elling is a phenomenon. New York Times describes him as ‘the standout male vocalist of our time’ and he has topped the Downbeat polls for ten years in a row. Elling sings standards, recites poetry and vocalises bebop solos and distinguished jazz melodies. On his recent CD The Gate he sings jazz compositions alongside soul and rock by, amongst others, Stevie Wonder, Joe Jackson and King Crimson. ‘One of the few post-Baby Boom hardcore jazz artists who can live up to the term “original”’ (Downbeat).
