Kapok is a young Dutch band with an unusual line-up: Morris Kliphuis on French horn, Timon Koomen on guitar and Remco Menting on percussion and drums. At the Bimhuis Kapok will be augmented with five brass players from the Kyteman Orchestra: K.O. Brass!
Kapok brings together the energy and compact form of pop with elements of jazz and improvisation. Kapok plays music that is new and recognizable at the same time, tight and controlled, only to veer suddenly into fascinatingly abstract free playing.
January 2014 saw the release of Kapok’s eponymous second album, which was recorded in the medieval castle of Beverweerd. The strong interplay on the CD is the result of more than one hundred gigs since the release of the acclaimed debut album Flatlands in 2012. Many performances took place in pop and rock venues. Morris Kliphuis was a member of Kyteman’s orchestra until 2012.
‘The trio excels in fervid teamwork, with playful themes, harmonized melodies and propulsive, eccentric rhythms’ (Jazzism on the new Kapok CD, which was rewarded 4 out of 5 stars).
The concert will consist of one set without intermission. Afterwards at the café: DJ Torpedo & Kwammie Rocket
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
