JORIS ROELOFS TRIO feat. MATT PENMAN & TED POOR
Saturday12 December 2015

Joris Roelofs is renowned as ‘an excellent reeds player’ (Trouw). The bass clarinet has a prominent role on Amateur Dentist, the new album by his New York-based trio.

Joris Roelofs excels at alto saxophone as well as bass clarinet and is rightfully praised as ‘an excellent reeds player’ (Trouw). On his most recent album Amateur Dentist he collaborates with two remarkable talents from his former hometown New York, double bassist Matt Penman and drummer Ted Poor. Alongside many original compositions he takes on melodic pieces such as the 14th century composition La Messe de Nostre Dame by Guillaume de Machaut. Other sources of inspiration are Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor by Alexander Scriabin and the music of Duke Ellington.

Joris Roelofs has played the Bimhuis before with Jesse van Ruller and Clemens van der Feen in the Chambertones Trio. Matt Penman has collaborated with John Scofield and Madeleine Peyroux and Ted Poor has accompanied Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkel and many others.

‘Penman and Poor have great control, keeping the ensemble playing very close, playfully anticipating of Roelofs’s unpredictable note sequences’ (de Volkskrant).

‘The combination of bass clarinet and double bass is exciting. Both instruments flexibly exchange roles in the low register’ (NRC).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
