Swing and bebop, ever soulful: tenor sax hero and Grammy winner Joe Lovano dives into the rich history of mainstream jazz. ‘A force of nature’ (Downbeat).
Joe Lovano is one of the best and most versatile tenor saxophonists of all time. His Blue Note oeuvre contains tributes to artists from Coltrane to Sinatra and from Caruso to Fela Kuti, alongside collaborations with legendary musicians in every possible line-up. He recorded over twenty albums and has won countless awards, including a Grammy. Now he’s back at the Bimhuis with his Classic Quartet, diving into the rich history of mainstream jazz through swing and bebop, ever soulful. An active proponent of straight-ahead jazz, Lovano drives the edges while honoring the structures.
‘Joe Lovano works in many forms, but at bottom he’s a soulful, note caressing, tradition loving tenor player’ (New York Times).
