At the start of the new year, Jazzfest Amsterdam offers a taste of what’s to come at the festival later this year (21 March 2020 at Studio/K). Jazzfest brings together young talents and established names from various genres, from accessible swing to unruly improv and boundless groove, all under one roof.
Specially for JazzFest Minifest, Jesse van Ruller chose a young musician to perform together with his trio: saxophonist Gideon Tazelaar, who made name in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Jesse van Ruller is being praised for his bright, fluent guitar playing by famous colleagues such as Pat Metheny and John Scofield. He has performed at previous editions of JazzFest, for example in a legendary concert with singer Becca Stevens.
Exciting is the very first meeting between Mexican singer/bassist Fuensanta Méndez and Romanian clarinet player Alex Simu. Despite their opposite backgrounds they have important things in common: both are educated in jazz and both use live electronics. At Minifest they will present original compositions and free improv alongside solo performances.
Three musicians from various backgrounds will present the premiere of their brand new band ADAMAS CIRCUS: pianist Martin Fondse, Syrian percussionist Modar Salama and drummer and JazzFest curator Felix Schlarmann. The surprising line-up features effects on both drums and percussion alongside many synthesizers.
The evening will end stylish with bassist and composer Zack Lober stepping behind the turntables to provide a specially curated DJ set of music in honor of the 2020 edition of JazzFest Minifest.
