JazzArt Orchestra invites Jason Marsalis

Percussionist Jason Marsalis guests with both JazzArt Orchestra and Thomas Pol Quartet. The common thread is jazz from New Orleans, the native ground of the world famous Marsalis family.

In this double bill ‘artist in residence’ Jason Marsalis will show off his versatility. The younger brother of Wynton and Branford Marsalis will perform on vibes with the JazzArt Orchestra and on drums with the Thomas Pol Quartet. The jazz music from his birthplace New Orleans is the common thread through the program, for which Jason himself wrote a number of new arrangements.

Jason Marsalis has a progressive view on traditional New Orleans swing jazz and prefers to bring it in a contemporary way. He is the youngest descendant of the world famous Marsalis family that includes trumpeter Wynton and saxophonist Branford. At the age of six he already sat behind his first drum kit. Right after earning his college degree he already performed with greats such as Lionel Hampton and Joe Henderson. Aside from his drumming he steadily developed himself as a remarkable talent on vibraphone.

The JazzArt Orchestra from the city of Zwolle is making waves with varied programs that appeal to a growing audience. Recent guest artists include Dutch pianist and band leader Martin Fondse and American double bassist John Clayton. Like the other artists-in-residence, Jason Marsalis will collaborate with up-and-coming musicians during his week in The Netherlands. With the Thomas Pol Quartet he will perform music from the 1950s and 60s included in the Silverbook, a selection of modern jazz from New Orleans with compositions by, among others, Ellis Marsalis, James Black and Harold Battiste.

‘This jazz orchestra is a perfect example of the talent that can be found in the small and art-full country of the Netherlands. They embrace playing jazz the same way I like to – at the highest level you can possibly give and with serious fun!’ (double bassist, composer, arranger and Grammy winner John Clayton on JazzArt Orchestra).
