FLAT EARTH SOCIETY
FLAT EARTH SOCIETY
- Starts
- 20:30
An adventurous trip through the universe of Peter Vermeersch and his 14-piece orchestra. ‘They play irreverent, humorous and with an open view’ (de Volkskrant).
Flat earth Society is a big band like no other. The Flemish ensemble operates in the tradition of singular composers such as Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and Frank Zappa: unpredictable, eccentric and very disciplined at the same time. March 2016 sees the release of their 16th album ‘Terms of Embarrassment, Homage to Zappa – or not. He is dead anyway’, some of which they certainly will include in their set. No weak covers, but original compositions in the style of the mustached American legend, where the well-known moustache will once again shine from shine from the grave.
‘They play irreverent, humorous and with an open view… sometimes beautiful and sometimes deadpan’ (de Volkskrant).
‘They are comfortably tight but not uptight, and there’s not a duff soloist among them. Vermeersch mixes controlled chaos, genre jump-cuts and a splash of conduction in with his written arrangements’ (The Wire).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
