In 1997 X-Legged Sally-clarinettist/composer/arranger Peter Vermeersch started the big band Flat Earth Society, named after the fellowship of Britons who insist the earth is flat. Vermeersch describes FES as ‘music with skid marks and welding fumes. And the exhaust pipe is shot.’ Their debut CD was called Bonk, they wrote the music for the theatre piece Larf by Josse de Pauw and the film Minoes and released the CD The Armstrong Mutations, with typical FES- adaptations of such classics as St. Louis Blues and Perdido Street Blues. “A circus-y, soundtrack-esque, Raymond Scott-like, punchy, dynamic big band sound with juicy arrangements and a huge orchestral sound – tune in!” (DownBeat).
