Festival ColorEs Colombia

SAMUEL TORRES SEXTET
ALÉ KUMÁ & DIZZY MANDJEKU
The ColorEs Colombia festival sheds new light on Colombian music and culture, featuring renowned musicians from Congo and Colombia.

ColorEs Colombia focuses on contemporary music and culture from Colombia, with concerts, exhibitions, films and lectures on various locations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Maastricht, from 4 until 14 October.

Before the concert at 8 PM the documentary Tempo Rubato about Samuel Torres will be shown. The documentary starts at 20:00 and last about 18 minutes. There will be English subtitles.

The first edition of the festival in 2016 focused on ‘New Colombian Music’, with new generations re-inventing traditional styles and mixing them with, for example, pop, jazz and hip-hop. This second edition demonstrates how this new wave manifests itself outside of Colombia. This double concert at the BIMHUIS emphasizes the relationship Colombia – Africa. Samuel Torres Sextet and Alé Kumá & Dizzy Mandjeku are the headliners of the festival.

Versatile Colombian percussionist Samuel Torres is famous for his breathtaking percussion solos. He lives in New York and has performed with Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente, Chick Corea, Lila Downs, Alejandro Sanz, Mike Stern, Richard Bona et al. At the BIMHUIS he will perform with his sextet.

Afro Colombian top formation Alé Kumá contacted Congolese master guitarist Dizzy Mandjeku (who has previously collaborated with Zap Mama and Stromae) and his Belgian band for an exploration of their common roots. Together they form an 11-piece ensemble rooted in Congolese soukous and rumba and Afro-Colombian champeta.

‘A true revelation. Very exciting, vibrant and vibrating music’ (Written in Music on the album Palenque Matongé by Djizzy Mandjeku & Alé Kumá).
