ERIC REVIS QUARTET
Sunday24 May 2015

Double bassist Eric Revis, who played with Branford Marsalis, now comes to the fore with his masterful New York band. Their powerful playing balances melody and abstraction.

Double bass player Eric Revis plays so powerful and self-assured that he sticks out everywhere, in the popular bands of Branford Marsalis and Kurt Rosenwinkel as well as in uncompromising power trios with Peter Brötzmann and Nasheet Waits. He played on the Grammy Award-winning album Contemporary Jazz by Branford Marsalis. With his own all star quartet he balances between melodic contemporary jazz and cutting-edge improvisation.

In this quartet, Eric Revis plays with three masterful musicians from New York who are relatively unknown in the Netherlands, but who can measure their strength with the very best: alto saxophonist Darius Jones, tenor player Bill McHenry and drummer Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground). Their recent album In Memory of Things Yet Seen (Clean Feed) contains original music alongside compositions by Sun Ra and Sunny Murray.

‘He’s one of those dudes you ought to follow whether you know where he’s going or not—something gripping invariably happens on the way’ (Village Voice).

‘Eric’s sound is the sound of doom; big, thick, percussive’ (Branford Marsalis).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
