Ensemble Denada might we a big band from Norway, but still the cliché’s of both big bands and Scandinavian jazz are grandiosely avoided by band leader Helge Sunde. The Norwegian trombonist/composer takes his cue from free-thinking American such as Gil Evans, Frank Zappa and Weather Report, evoking associations with cartoons and slapstick, as well as contemporary ‘serious’ music.
