On the Roof 10 Years Anniversary

Early Show: Juan Pablo Dobal & Untraveled Land & More

Tenth anniversary of the illustrious series of summer concerts.

For ten summers already, On The Roof has been organizing concerts by sunset, on the roof of a wonderful location in Amsterdam-Noord. The time is right for an anniversary at the BIMHUIS, with tastemakers from the past ten years. The program starts at the Atrium at 6:45 PM: The songs of Gabriel Milliet are like letters or old photographs. The Brazilian singer/guitarist has been living in Amsterdam since 2017, but his birthplace São Paulo still has a strong presence in his music. At the BIMHUIS he will be accompanied by Yanna Pelser (viola/vocals) and Dario Trapani (guitar/vocals).

Argentinean-born pianist Juan Pablo Dobal opens the anniversary with a solo performance. For decades, Dobal has been playing tango with Carel Kraayenhof. He has also collaborated with Omar Mollo, Fernando Lameirinhas and Eric Vloeimans, among many others.

Viola player Oene van Geel is a regular at On The Roof and has could be seen there with various groups including Zapp and Estafest. In the brand new Untraveled Land he plays with another former guest, Nawras Altaky, who’s known for his enchanting improvisations on ud, the Arabic lute. Untraveled Land departs from the narrative power of music. Explosive passages, a long arc of tension, silence: there’s room for everything. The group is rounded out by cellist Annie Tangberg and saxophonist Koen Boeijinga.
