Double bass duets: Larry Grenadier / Rebecca Martin & Atzko Kohashi / Tony Overwater

Famous double bass players form new duos in this double concert.

In this double concert, two respected double bassists will appear. Larry Grenadier from New York has played several sold-out shows on our stage with the Brad Mehldau Trio. He will now form a duo with his life partner, singer Rebecca Martin. Before them, pianist Atzko Kohashi will appear with another respected bassist, Tony Overwater, who has performed here many times with the Tony Overwater Trio.

Japanese pianist Atzko Kohashi and Dutch double bassist Tony Overwater have crossed paths in Amsterdam. Together they strive for an open and organic sound. The duo made a deep impression with their album Crescent, based on the eponymous record by John Coltrane. With equal respect they have embraced songs by, for example, Charlie Haden and Wayne Shorter, alongside original compositions by Tony Overwater.

Singer-songwriter Rebecca Martin and jazz bassist Larry Grenadier have performed together for a quarter of a century. Earlier this year they released the album After Midnight with the Portuguese brass and wind ensemble Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos. The album traces highlights from throughout Martin’s catalogue, plus a handful of standards. The singer and guitarist is also part of the trio Tillery with Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, among many other projects.
