Corrie van Binsbergen & HKU Large Ensemble

Open minded ensemble plays compositions by Dutch jazz phenomenon.

‘A mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it is not open’: with this motto by Frank Zappa in mind, Corrie van Binsbergen conducts the HKU Large Ensemble through highlights from her oeuvre. The compositions will be performed by a special line-up featuring ten wind players, a double rhythm section, a mallet player and a spoken word performer. Various courses of the HKU music academy will be represented in the ensemble, such as Jazz & Pop, Classical, and Musician 3.0.

Composer and guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen leads Stichting Brokken, a foundation which has initiated countless crossover projects. She became known with her group Corrie en de (Grote) Brokken. She developed a singular and surprising combination of music and literature, which she has dubbed ‘films for the ears’. She has collaborated with many literary authors, and she has received important awards such as the Boy Edgar Prijs. Her collaboration with the HKU Large Ensemble premiered this spring at TivoliVredenburg, which led to a concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
