Minimal music by, among others, Steve Reich, by the ensemble of percussionist Colin Currie, ‘one of the greatest musicians in the world today’ (Steve Reich).

Scottish percussionist Colin Currie (1976) is being recognized as a phenomenal performer who performs contemporary music at the highest level. His own Colin Currie Group was originally founded to perform a composition by minimal music pioneer Steve Reich. During this festival the percussion group will perform Quartet, a new Reich piece from 2014, alongside music by Terry Riley and George Crumb.

The monumental Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III) by George Crumb paints an idyllic summer evening with birds and insects breaking the silence, followed by the threat of a thunderstorm. This dream music is juxtaposed with parts from Riley’s The Heavens Ladder, Book 5 from 1994.

Steve Reich on Colin Currie in The Herald: ‘Currie is one of the greatest musicians in the world today.’

‘An athlete and a star, as well as an outstanding musician’ (The Guardian).

Program:
Terry Riley Cinco de Mayo from Heavens Ladder Book 5
George Crumb Music for a Summer Evening (from Makrokosmos III)
Steve Reich Quartet
