BvR Flamenco Bigband: 10 Years

Unique big band connects jazz to flamenco, and celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Hispano-Dutch saxophonist Bernard van Rossum has been leading his BvR Flamenco Big Band for ten years. Conceived around a core of Flamenco protagonists, this extra-large big band is a unique phenomenon. In Van Rossum’s compositions, flamenco harmonies and rhythms are redefined through the colorful orchestration and the dynamic range of the big band. For his music, van Rossum was awarded the prestigious Rogier van Otterloo award. All this is reason for a musical birthday celebration with flamenco dance by Irene Alvarez.

The BvR Flamenco big band unites top talents from flamenco and jazz. The critically acclaimed debut album Jaleo Holandés was released at the Flamenco Biennale and closely followed by Luz de luna, featuring members of Paco de Lucía’s band, as well as Dutch saxophone prodigy Ben van Gelder. For the third album Del río a la mar, Van Rossum invited two more collaborators of guitar legend De Lucía, bassist Carles Benavent and singer Rafael de Utrera.
