Butcher Brown

New American jazz funk with hip-hop beats and rich echoes of Weather Report, early Earth, Wind & Fire and Zappa. ‘Warm, fuzzy, funky and raw jazz’ (SoulBounce).

Straight from the American underground, these four musicians from Richmond, Virginia, sound like one organism. On the one hand their music has the feel of progressive fusion and jazz from the 1960s and 70s, with analogue keyboards, electric guitars and funky drums. On the other hand it’s obvious that these guys grew up with hip-hop and electronic music.

This February sees the release of their new EP, the follow-up to the album Camden Session, which was recorded in the London studio of Mark Ronson, world famous producer of Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars and many others. Devone Harris a.k.a. DJ Harrison, keyboardist and visionary of the group, played with Jack White and released his solo album Hazy Moods on the Stones Throw label. The other band members have worked together with, among others, Nicholas Payton, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah and Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave.
