Boi Akih is first and foremost a duo. Monica Akihary sings in the language of her ancestors, who came from the Moluccas, specifically the island Haruku. The songs of Akihary and her partner Niels Brouwer reveal influences that include jazz, raga and flamenco. The duo regularly extends its line-up, this time with Balinese gamelan player I Made Subandi. Boi Akih has released two CDs on the renowned record label Enja. ‘Akihary’s voice is very colourful, especially in the lower registers. Brouwer’s contrapuntal parts are always spot on’ (NRC).
