BIMLAB 39 curated by Onno Govaert & Ben van Gelder

Drummer Onno Govaert and saxophonist Ben van Gelder are the curators of this edition of BIMLAB, the concert series with surprising improvisations in the BIMHUIS café.

BIMLAB is an improv series in the BIMHUIS café with unexpected musical encounters. Unbeknown to each other, two curators are selected from various corners of the jazz and improvised music scene for every edition. They will invite musicians for an evening of short, adventurous sessions. Curators for this edition are drummer Onno Govaert, who will perform at the Doek Festival at the BIMHUIS earlier this month, plus his contemporary and former fellow student, saxophonist Ben van Gelder.

Drummer and instant composer Onno Govaert is a crucial member of the Amsterdam jazz scene and part of the youngest generation of improvising musicians playing at underground clubs such as OT301 and Zaal 100. He plays in bands such as Cactus Truck and Universal Indians featuring Joe McPhee.

Since he was 18 alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder has been traveling between the Netherlands and New York. In ‘the big apple’ he studied with his role models Lee Konitz and Mark Turner. He founded his own band there and collaborated with internationally renowned peers such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Aaron Parks.
