BIMHUIS 40 JAAR KICK-OFF WEEKEND DAY 5
Sunday5 October 2014

The Bimhuis anniversary season opens with a long weekend full of performances. Sunday’s concert includes the exciting Chicago Hammond trio of Joey DeFrancesco, who has been leading the Downbeat Critics Polls for years.

The Bimhuis, ‘the best and most beautiful jazz club in the whole world’ (Han Bennink), celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. One event not to miss is the kick-off weekend, a long weekend full of performances by rising stars, familiar names and many surprises.

John Engels, the ‘grand old man of Dutch jazz drumming’ (de Volkskrant) keeps on looking forward to new challenges. An ideal partner in his quest is pianist Guus Janssen, who as a composer has made an important contribution to post-war Dutch music. A remarkable duo by two brilliant and refined improvisers.

American organist Joey DeFrancesco is the true heir of Jimmy Smith when it comes to representing the Hammond organ in jazz; like his master he continuously gets voted #1 in the Downbeat Critics Polls. At age 17 he already recorded with Miles Davis and since then he has collaborated with among others John Mclaughlin and Ray Charles. In his current trio he plays with guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise) and drummer George Fludas, both from Chicago.

The solo series by pianist Dave Burrell are becoming a tradition at the Bimhuis. This year he will return for a new series of solo concerts in which he will present his unique take on jazz history. Burrell, a pioneer of the 1960s New York avant-garde, was the musical partner of groundbreaking musicians such as Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open after the concert from 6.00 PM (reservations via 020-7882158).

For this concert you can purchase your ticket online or if still
available, at the box office of the Bimhuis.
