His interpretations of the great American songwriters are especially acclaimed; he has recorded albums dedicated to Hoagy Carmichael, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington.
Bill Charlap grew up in New York as the son of singer Sandy Stewart and Broadway composer Moose Charlap. He made name accompanying famous singers such as Diana Krall, Sheila Jordan and Tony Bennett. He won a Grammy Award for the album The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern with Tony Bennett. The most recent album of the Bill Charlap Trio, Street of Dreams, appeared on the legendary jazz label Blue Note.
