Arifa, founded in Amsterdamin 2010, is an encounter between four
musicians of various backgrounds. On the one hand they are rooted in the
traditions of Turkey, the Middle Eastand the Balkans. On the other hand
they stand firmly in the contemporary improvised music scene. The result
is a unique sound. The musicians have collaborated with, amongst others,
Goran Bregovic, Theodossii Spassov and Theo Loevendie. Their recent CD
Beyond Babylon was voted best world music release of 2010 by Mixed
magazine. Dutch daily De Volkskrant crowned both Arifa’s Bimhuis debut
concert and the CD with five stars: ‘In its exquisite beauty this debut
album holds up with the best works of Anouar Brahem’.
