The Amsterdam Marimba Weekend is all about the melodic percussion instrument marimba, one of the oldest and newest instruments: from the African balafon, through the Central American Chonta, and the classical modern instrument of nowadays. During the Amsterdam Marimba Weekend we welcome renowned virtuoso players as well as trail-blazing composers, upcoming talent and tomorrow’s stars. The highlight of the four-day festival is the closing concert at the BIMHUIS, a symbiosis of eclectic styles, with jazz and improvisation, West African traditional music, Latin, electronics, and classical music.
Amsterdam welcomes the stunning, talented Seydou Diabaté (aka Kanazoé) and his Kanazoé Orkestra for the first time ever! They are famous worldwide for their unique blend of styles, with the distinctive technique on the traditional balafon in a fusion with jazz music. Mexican-born Victor Mendoza, vibraphonist, producer, composer and professor of jazz vibraphone at the legendary Berklee college of music, is featured with his prestigious Latin jazz band. AMW will also introduce a new generation: Viktor Benev performs with the electronic MalletKAT. Tatiana Koleva’s Youth Percussion Pool, the house ensemble of AMW, will perform the acclaimed arrangement of the West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. Youth Percussion Pool will also partner up with Victor Mendoza and Viktor Benev to perform a new spectacular arrangement by Koleva and Benev.
Afterparty with drinks, marimba music & lounge music by DJ Joost Buis. For details check Amsterdam Marimba Weekend. The festival is initiated by Tatiana Koleva and Henny van den Abbeelen (Pustjens Percussion Products).
