American jazz magazine Downbeat includes her in the top 20 of current jazz drummers. Allison Miller is hailed for her melodic drum style, but also for her merits as a composer, songwriter and band leader. At the most recent edition of North Sea Jazz she gave a fantastic performance with her band Boom Tic Boom.
At the BIMHUIS this motley crew will perform music from the album Glitter Wolf (March 2019), described by the band itself as ‘a celebratory genre-busting organic mash up of Bach, clave, klezmer and Jazz Messengers’. Unique, versatile music, tailor-made for the singular band members who have all made name for themselves: pianist Myra Melford, violinist Jenny Scheinman, clarinettist Ben Goldberg, trumpeter Kirk Knuffke and bassist Todd Sickafoose.
Allison Miller came up as a drummer playing behind big American (rock) stars and singer-songwriters such as Ani DiFranco and Natalie Merchant and as a side player to jazz heroes such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Patricia Barber and Marty Ehrlich. Her compositions have drawn comparisons to chamber music and film music. Boom Tic Boom is running for 10 years already and Miller describes the band members as family.
‘A drummer with charisma to burn. With seamless ease, she ranges from freebop to foursquare swing, from heartland narratives to urban reflections. True to its name, Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom wastes no time revealing its fondness for shaking, rattling and rolling’ (JazzTimes).
