ALLEN GINSBERG IN HOLLAND / 1983 REVISITED

Tribute to beat poet Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), with poetry, jazz and new music. Featuring among others the Mondriaan Quartet, which collaborated with Ginsberg while he visited The Netherlands in 1983.

Allen Ginsberg in Nederland/1983 Revisited is a musical-literary performance featuring the Mondriaan Quartet and musicians Jacq and Bert Palinckx, with reading and vocals by Han Buhrs, Joep Bremmers and Eddie Woods.

World famous American beat poet Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) toured The Netherlands in 1983, where he visited several cities including Vlissingen (Flushing). There he gave a colorful performance and wrote a poem on the beach entitled ‘What the sea throws up at Flushing’. The evening afterwards he recorded a wonderful album with the Mondriaan Quartet.

This new performance is a lively reconstruction of the legendary tour of Ginsberg and his following, including poet Simon Vinkenoog, Ginsberg’s Dutch translator. It’s a tribute to Ginsberg and the beat generation which included writers William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. It focuses on the renowned Mondriaan Quartet, which only just started in 1983. They will perform their beautiful Ginsberg collaboration ‘September on Jessore Road’, but there is more. Performer Eddie Woods, a close friend of Ginsberg, will read a poem. Guitarist/composer Jacq Palinckx wrote new music which touches on jazz and sound art. Ginsberg’s most famous work ‘Howl’ will be performed in a new Dutch translation, with vocalist Han Buhrs as a driving force. Obviously the Flushing poem is included, in its Dutch version. Literator Joep Bremmers, Ginsberg´s current translator, will provide the contextual background to the concert.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
